Suggesting that money is not an end in itself, Bob has long said that "money and finance have value, but so does sleeping at night". | A native of St. Louis, Osher earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the University of Missouri. After two years of military service, he began his distinguished investment career as an account executive with Dean Witter in 1963. |
Preferring portfolio management to the brokerage industry, Bob joined Wells Fargo Bank three years later. He soon became overseer of the bank’s common trust funds, Pacific Bell’s 5 million equity pension plan, and Wells Fargo’s own pension plan. Bob later attended the Stanford University Investment Management Program and accepted a supervisory position with Western Asset Management, the investment arm of First Interstate Bank. As Vice President of Western Asset’s Personal Trust Investment Department, Osher headed a team that managed 1,760 personal trusts worth 0 million. In 1978, Bob joined Van Deventer & Hoch where he served as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager during the firm’s impressive asset growth from million to over billion. In 1992, Bob founded Robert Osher Investment Management to provide an alternative source of investment counsel to clients that prefer the tailored management and personal service missing at so many institutional firms and mutual funds. Bob’s experience and vision have propelled Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management’s reputation as a leading investment advisory firm that clients trust. Bob is a member of the CFA Society of Los Angeles, Economic Roundtable, Fiduciary Roundtable of the San Gabriel Valley, Glendale Estate Planning Council, Pasadena Angels, The Athenaeum, The Huntington Society of Fellows, Pasadena Arts League and Oakmont Country Club. He lives in La Canada with his wife Jean. |

| James is President of Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management, the boutique wealth management firm he co-founded with Bob Osher in 1993. He also serves as the firm's President, Chief Portfolio Strategist and Chief Compliance Officer. |
As Chief Portfolio Strategist, James leads the firm's Investment Committee and is responsible for implementing investment strategies for client portfolios. In addition to being a self-proclaimed "armchair economist", James is an expert in analyzing fundamentally sound equity securities and brings a strong background in financial planning to the investment management business. He has pioneered the "Bridge Evaluation" for clients, a solutions-based approach that offers a clear overview of life and planning goals, and ensures that investment portfolios are properly aligned with those goals while minimizing risk.
James graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, has completed the U.C. Berkeley Extension coursework for financial planning and is a Certified Retirement Counselor. He is a member of the CFA Society of Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the Financial Planning Association and the Glendale Estate Planning Council
James serves on the Foundation Board at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center, the LionsFund Council at Loyola Marymount University and the ADG Alumni Advisory Board. He is a member of Oakmont Country Club and lives in La Canada with his wife Connie and daughters Grace and Quinlan. |
Mary Beth Pavia, CFP®
Associate Portfolio Manager
Mary Beth is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and Associate Portfolio Manager for Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management. Mary Beth received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance with an emphasis in Financial Services from San Diego State University. While working towards her degree at SDSU, she simultaneously completed an additional set of coursework and earned her Personal Financial Planning Certificate, making her eligible to sit for the Certified Financial Planner designation in the coming months. She began her career in wealth management as Director of Client Services for Financial Strategies, Inc. where she earned her California Life & Health Insurance license. She was subsequently recruited by Smith Barney as a Registered Client Service Associate and earned her Series 7 and Series 66 licenses. Prior to joining Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management, Mary Beth was a Junior Partner and Financial Advisor with a team at Morgan Stanley that managed million in assets. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Pasadena Jaycees and is an active member of the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. Mary Beth currently resides in Pasadena.
Rashaun Benn
Client Service Associate
Rashaun began her career in investment administration with Union Bank as a Sales Assistant and advanced to the position of Senior Operations Clerk. She later joined Merrill Lynch as an Administrative Assistant where she supported a rapidly growing institutional consultant team. Rashaun left Merrill Lynch to join Provident Investment Counsel as a Trading Assistant. Rashaun joins Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management after a 10-year absence from the business to raise her family. She lives in Pasadena with her husband John Todd and three children, Jonathan, Rachel and Natalie. Rashaun is a graduate of the University of Phoenix and is a certificated Paralegal.
Robert A Bartshe, CIC
Advisory Council
After graduating from Claremont McKenna College in 1964, Bob earned a Master's in Business Administration from the UCLA Graduate School of Business in 1969. He was awarded the prestigious Chartered Investment Counselor designation in 1979. Bob’s distinguished 33-year investment career began in 1970 as a Portfolio Manager with the investment management firm Lionel D. Edie. He joined CMB Investment Counselors in 1979 and then Cramblit & Carney in 1987, establishing a reputation as one of the premier fixed income managers in the Los Angeles region. In 1998, Bob co-founded Palladian Capital Management and served as the firm’s Chairman until he retired in 2000. In addition to his involvement on our Advisory Council, Bob serves on the Board of the Friends of Child Advocates and is also active with the I Have A Dream Foundation and St. Mary's Academy. Bob resides in Bel Air with his wife Kathy.
James F. Givens, CFA

After graduating from Claremont McKenna College in 1962, Jim earned a Master’s Degree in Finance from the UCLA Graduate School of Business. In 1970 he earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. During his 35-year career, Jim gained extensive investment experience managing mutual funds, pension funds, foundations, endowments and family accounts. He began his career in 1964 as a Securities Analyst at Farmers Insurance Group and later became the company’s Chief Investment Officer for equities. Between 1970 and 1999 he served in several other senior positions including Executive Vice President for Transamerica Investment Management, Managing Director for CMB Investment Counselors, Executive Vice President for Cramblit & Carney, and finally, Chairman Emeritus for Palladian Capital Management. After retiring in 1999, Jim has become involved in volunteer activities and is currently Vice Chairman of Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center. He also serves on the Finance and Investment Committees of Catholic Healthcare West, the largest non-profit hospital organization in California. Jim lives in Glendale with his wife Eileen, a former mayor of Glendale.
