The high-quality, GARP style that Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management employs is an appropriate “core” strategy for most long-term investors.  While we manage the core of portfolios in-house using individual equities, we utilize mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to obtain exposure to other important asset classes and achieve optimal diversification.

Screening from an extensive universe of no-load and low-cost funds and ETFs, we compare and select based on the following criteria:

  1. investment style;
  2. long-term performance;
  3. quality and number of holdings;
  4. tenure of portfolio manager;
  5. turnover;
  6. minimum investment; and
  7. fee.

Typically, funds and ETFs are built around the "core" and include such asset classes as international, emerging markets, small and mid cap, sector funds, high yield, preferred stock, REITs and global fixed income.

Osher Van de Voorde Investment Management monitors the mutual funds and ETFs, handles all reporting to the client and rebalances as warranted.  Portfolios are reviewed individually and as a composite to ensure consistency with investment goals and other planning considerations.  The combination of individual securities with funds and ETFs, personally supervised and tailored to the client's long-term objectives, offers a preferable alternative to pure mutual fund portfolios and “wrap-fee” accounts.  Additionally, each portfolio is managed for superior after-tax returns and tailored to the client's unique tax circumstances.

Inclusive of in-house management of the portfolio core and financial planning, the annual fee when mutual funds and ETFs are included typically ranges between 1% and 1.25% depending on the size of the overall portfolio and asset classes selected.
